Leg cramps are something we all have suffered from at times, and something we all want to avoid. You are most likely to have muscle spasms in a foot, the side of your lower leg, in your thighs (the back of your thighs is most common), or in your calf muscle. They seem to occur at night, just when you need your rest and sleep. It can make sleep impossible, and can disrupt your sleep so much that the next day you are groggy and performing below your peak. The agony and pain of a leg cramp can be unbearable. There are things you can try as remedies (I have a suggestion of such a remedy later in this article), and there are some things you can do for yourself for the prevention of painful leg spasms.

* Muscle tiredness, muscles that have been overworked
* Heavy, strenuous, exercising
* Being dehydrated, not drinking enough water
* Having a high body weight, but not necessarily being obese
* Electrolyte imbalances
* Medications you are taking, prescribed or otherwise
* Being pregnant
* A magnesium deficiency
* A calcium deficiency
* Motor neuron diseases can cause severe cramps
